1 October 2009 is the date that Governor Gramholm is closing the Library of Michigan. This state library is fantastic for genealogy research. Among her plans at the moment are to ship out all of the genealogy department and the archives to other libraries. University of Michigan and MSU are two considerations that have been mention...although there doesn't seem to be any promises that these libraries will actually allow access to the records/books once they get them. For more information google 'closing of library of michigan'.

Its a shame that the governor is doing this, in fact its downright stupid. IF the university libraries get the books and records I think they SHOULD allow access within the facility at the very least, but even IF they get the items it may take months to years for not only anyone to get access to them but for the facilities to actually organize them for people TO access them.

While these type of cost savings/efficiency actions are a shock, I want to point out that in the executive order issued by the governor, the State Librarian shall among other things: "Maintain open and free access to the collections of the Library of Michigan, including, but not limited to the genealogy collection. Any effort to transfer library collections, including transfers to other libraries, shall assure continued open and free access to the collections by the public." I think it is a little too early to speculate.

Gov Granholm cannot run for gov again due to term limits. Anything she does now she does without fear of voter retribution. You need to contact your state rep and senator and voice your displeasure over this action.
